Q7 of 26 Page 1

Write one difference each between

(a) Template strand and coding strand in a transcription unit of DNA.

(b) Exon and intron gene sequences.

(a) The process of copying genetic information from one strand of DNA into RNA is called transcription.

There are two DNA strands in the structural gene of a transcription unit i.e. template strand and coding strand.

Difference between template strand and coding strand –

The polarity of template strand is 3’ 5’ and the polarity of coding strand is 5’3’.

(b) Introns or the intervening sequence are considered as the non-coding part of the genes, while the exons or the expressed sequence are known to be as the coding part for proteins of the genes.
