How does nature of terrain influence the density of roads in India ?

The nature of the terrain affects the cost of road construction. Plains offer cheaper and easier construction of roads while it is costlier to construct the same in mountainous and hilly areas. Thus, plains like the Northern Gangetic plains have a higher density of road than the high-altitude areas of the Himalayan Mountain Range.
