Classify land according to ownership into two broad categories. Describe the main features of each category.

Based on ownership, land can be classified into two broad categories – private land and common property resources (CPRs). The following are the main features of each category –


Private Land –


• Owned by an individual or a group of individuals.


• Used for private purpose.


• Can be used personally or rented out for a fee.


• Right of usage, maintenance and development belongs to the owner.


Common Property Resources –


• Owned by state.


• Used for community purpose.


• Source of livelihood for landless and marginal farmers.


• Provides fodder for livestock and fuel for communities along with other minor forest products.


• Includes community forests, pasture lands, village water bodies and other public places.


• Unlike privately owned land, a group larger than a household or family unit exercises rights of use and carries responsibility of management.
