Describe the administrative features of the Mauryan Empire.

The main features of the administrative system of the Mauryan Empire were:-

I. There were five major political centres in the empire viz, Pataliputra, Taxila, Ujjayini, Tosali and Suvamagiri.


II. The administrative control was strongest in areas around the capital and the provincial centres and these centres were carefully chosen by the kings.


III. The Mauryas were also mentioned in later Buddhist, Jaina, Puranic, and Sanskrit literature.


IV. Moreover the inscription of Asoka on rocks and pillars are regarded as the most valuable sources.


V. Things found in archaeological excavation, especially sculpture are regarded as an important sources.


VI. Contemporary works like writing of Megasthenes, Arthashastra by Chanakaya are important sources.
