Members of an eco-club of a school took up a project on “Reduce the generation of solid waste in the school and how to manage it”. They worked in close association with the different class monitors, safai karamcharis and the members of their school canteen.

(a) Explain your view giving reasons on the topic of the project.

(b) List, giving examples, the three categories of the waste generated in the school.

(c) Suggest any two ways of managing the solid waste.

(a) My view with reasons on generation of solid waste-

i. Great initiative taken in order to tackle one of the biggest challenges.

ii. Population increase and rapid urbanization has led to an increase in the solid waste production.

iii. Immediate actions have to be taken to manage this waste production as it has dramatic effects on human health.

iv. Improper disposal of solid waste can create unhygienic conditions which in turn can contribute to pollution leading to the outbreak of diseases.

V. Initiatives like these taken on a small scale when applied to a larger scale with greater man power and with the help of the government can bring about really good changes.

(b) Three categories of the waste generated in school are-

i. Biodegradable wastes such as paper and food waste.

Explanation: Wastes which can be degraded by living organisms is known are known as biodegradable wastes.

ii. Non-biodegradable wastes such as plastic bags and pen refills.

Explanation: Wastes that cannot be degraded/ decayed by living organisms are non-biodegradable wastes.

iii. Recyclable wastes such as tin cans and file folders.

Explanation: Wastes that can be reused are known as recyclable wastes.

(c) Two ways of managing solid wastes are:

i. By proper disposal of waste in sanitary landfills.

ii. By recycling the items thereby reducing waste production.
