The Soviet Union, the second most powerful country in the the world suddenly disintegrated due to the following reasons:

1. The economic stagnation was rising over the years and had led to consumer shortages.


2. The internal weaknesses of the Soviet Union were mostly observed in the political and economic institutions.


3. The Communist party was not held accountable to the people.


4. The system of the country was willing to openness in any form.


5. The corruption had increased.


6. The citizens become more aware and had gathered enough knowledge regarding the technological advancements over the world.


7. Most of the country’s resources were depleted in maintaining the military and nuclear arsenals.

The three reasons each for the ‘arms race’ as well as the ‘arms control’ during the Cold War are:


1. The cold war had not eliminated the rivalries between the two alliances. There was a mutual feeling of suspicion in them.


2. This led to an arms race.


3. Huge stock of arms was considered to be necessary to prevent wars.


4. On the other hand, both sides understood that war cannot be prevented even after applying many restraints.


5. This was due to the miscalculation of the number of weapons in the possession of the other country.


6. There was also a degree of misunderstanding the intentions of the other side.
