Q6 of 26 Page 1

Why does a solution containing non-volatile solute have higher boiling point than pure solvent ? Why is the elevation in boiling point a colligative property?

A solution containing non-volatile solute has higher boiling point than pure solvent, as the non-volatile solute decreases the vapour pressure of the solvent according to Raoult’s law. Hence higher boiling point increases.

Properties which depend on the ration of solute particles to that of solvent molecules are called colligative properties. Boiling point changes with the change in number of solute particles(concentration) hence elevation in boiling point is a colligative property.
