Q20 of 26 Page 1

An aromatic compound A on treatment with ammonia followed by heating forms compound B which on heating with Br2 and KOH forms compound C having molecular formula C6H7N. Give the structures of A,B and C.

aniline

The final product ‘C’ is said to have the molecular formula C6H7N is aniline, which was obtained by treatment with Br2 and KOH(Hoffmann degradation). So ‘B’ has to be benzamide, which has been obtained by treatment with ammonia, so ‘A’ has to be benzoic acid.
