Q22 of 27 Page 1

(a) What happens when D-glucose is treated with the following reagents: (i) HI (ii) conc. HNO3

(b) What is the basic structural difference between starch and cellulose?

(a) (i)

(ii) Nitric acid oxidizes glucose into saccharic acid.

(b) Starch is made up of -D-glucose units which are held by C1– C4 glycosidic linkage (amylose) or C1–C4 glycosidic linkage whereas branching occurs by C1–C6 glycosidic linkage (amylopectin). Whereas cellulose is made up of -D-glucose units which are joined by glycosidic linkage between C1 of one glucose unit and C4 of the next glucose unit.
