Q13 of 26 Page 1

(a) Write the expression for the magnetic force acting on a charged particle moving with velocity n in the presence of magnetic field B.

(b) A neutron, an electron and an alpha particle moving with equal velocities, enter a uniform magnetic field going into the plane of the paper as shown. Trace their paths in the field and justify your answer.

a)

The force which is applied on the particle of charge(q) with “n” velocity when entered in a magnetic field of B, is portrayed as

b)

When an neutron, electron, and an alpha particle enter in a magnetic field which is point inside the page or away from the user, the path of the particles are traced by equating the force of particle movement with force acted on the particle by the magnetic field(force on the particle is taken out by Fleming’s right hand rule).

where

is the charge of the particle, is the velocity, is the magnetic field, is the mass of the particle, is the radius of the motion of the particle.

1. For Neutron: The particle travels in straight line as there is no charge in a neutron thereby no variation is found in its movement.

2. For Electron: The electron due both charge and mass will move in a circle path due to magnetic field effect.

3. For Alpha particle: Like electron will move in a circular path but will have a larger radius due to high mass and charge strength.
