why does the ray of light while passing through a prism, bend towards its base?

When the ray of light while passing through a prism, it first travel from a rarer to a denser medium and bends towards the normal which is towards the base of the prism. When it again travels from denser to rarer medium again, it bends away from the normal which is towards the base of the prism.
