How will you test in the laboratory, whether the given sample of water is hard or soft?

The sample of water can be tested as follows:


1. Add few drops of soap solution on the water, if there occurs formation of lather, then the water is soft water


2. If lather is not formed, it means that the water contains salts of calcium fluoride and magnesium soleplate and thus, the water is hard water.
