(i) The refractive index is defined as the ratio of speed of light in air to the speed of light in the substance.


If we say that the refractive index of diamond is 2.42, it means that the ratio of the speed of light in air and the speed of light in diamond is 2.42. Since, the refractive index of diamond is quite high, it means that the speed of light in diamond is very low.
