Who discovered for the first time the basic principles of genetics?

The basic principle of genetics was discovered for the first time by Gregor John Mendel in mid-nineteenth century. He conducted his experiment on garden pea (Pisum sativum).

Now, Mendel is considered to be the father of Genetics.
