What is the significance of the testes being located in scrotal sacs outside the abdomen?

Can there be any abnormal situation regarding their location? If so, what is that and what is the harm caused due to it?

Testes are the sites of production of the male gametes; the spermatozoa. The normal human body temperature does not facilitate in the process of production of sperms. They cannot mature at such high temperatures. Therefore, the scrotal sacs are suspended outside the body cavity. The temperature of the scrotal sacs is 2-3 degrees lesser than that of the normal body temperature. Therefore, the maturation of sperms can occur without any problems.

If the temperature gets high, then the skin of the scrotal sacs becomes loose due to which the testes hang lower than their usual location. On the contrary, if the temperature is low, then the skin of the scrotal sacs gets folded and the testes are pushed closer to the body for warmth.

One abnormal condition has a possibility of occurring in which the testes do not descend into the scrotum in the embryonic stage. Because of this abnormality, the person will be considered sterile - incapable of producing sperms.
