Q5 of 174 Page 608

If the mean of five observations x, x + 2, x + 4, x + 6 and x + 8 is 11, find the value of x.

Observations are = x, x + 2, x + 4, x + 6, x + 8

No. of observations = 5

Given mean = 11

⇒ 11 =

⇒ x + x + 2 + x + 4 + x + 6 + x + 8 = 11 × 5

⇒ 5x + 20 = 55

⇒ 5x = 55 – 20

x = = 7

So, value of x = 7.
