Q10 of 43 Page 1

How did the plantation workers understand the idea of ‘Swaraj’? Explain.

Swaraj for the plantation workers:

1. For the plantation workers in Assam, it was the right to move freely from the enclosed spaces they were in and being able to connect to their villages.

2. Through the Inland Emigration Act, they were rarely given permission to get out of the tea plantations.

3. When they heard of non-cooperation, they left these plantations and thought that Gandhi would give them land.

Explanation: The plantation workers were not inspired by a deep nationalist feeling but rather a basic feeling of being able to go home.
