A 2.4 cm tall object is placed perpendicular to the principal axis of a convex lens of focal length 18 cm. The distance of the object from the lens is 12 cm. Find the position, size and nature of the image formed, using the lens formula.

Given: Height of object H1 = +2.4 cm

Focal length of convex lens = +18 cm (for convex lens)


Object distance u = -12 cm


Applying the lens formula:





On calculating we get



Therefore, v= -36 cm


Magnification is given by the relation:




Also magnification is given by:




Therefore, height of image will be 7.2 cm


The image formed will be virtual and erect.
