Q19 of 40 Page 1

How did consumer movement originate as a ‘social force’ in India?

Consumer movement began due to the need of protection:

1. There were numerous unfair and unethical trade practices that exploited consumers and caused dissatisfaction.

2. There was no legal system for the punishment of such exploitation. Food shortage, black marketing, adulteration etc. were widespread.

3. Consumer groups at the most wrote only articles and held exhibitions until the 1970s.

Explanation: Most of the merchants, traders, and sellers engaged in malpractices because of the absence of legal checks.
