Major challenges faced by Indian democracy:

1. Local governments: Even though the local level government has gained more power after decentralisation, it has to be strengthened further to increase participation at the local level.

2. Reservations for women: One-third of seats are reserved for women at the local level but this has to be applied to the state and central government also.

3. Internal democracy of party: Parties must operate in more transparent and democratic way. Dynastic succession must be prevented.

4. Money and muscle power: Influence of the wealthy and the powerful in the decision making process of the government is a major challenge.

5. Strengthening institutions: Increasing the efficiency of the democratic system and ensuring that the policies are implemented properly through the various mechanisms.

Explanation: No democratic government is ideal. Even though India has come a long way in democratic rule, it has to overcome many more challenges.
