Write IUPAC name of the following compound :

(CH3CH2)2NCH3 -

N-Ethyl-N-methylethanamine (tertiary amine)


Explanation: It’s a tertiary amine since both hydrogens in the -NH2 (amine group) are replaced by other groups (ethyl and methyl in thus case). As a ethyl and a methyl group is attached to N in the place of 2 hydrogens, we call it N- ethyl- N-methyl. Now the remaining is ethane with one hydrogen replaced by N to which above said ethyl methyl groups are attached. So it's ethanamine. Hence, complete IUPAC name is N-Ethyl-N-methyl ethanamine.
