Q6 of 37 Page 1

Complete the following reactions :

(i) NH3 + 3Cl2

(ii) XeF6 + 2H2O

OR

What happens when

(i) (NH4)2Cr2O7 is heated?

(ii) H3PO3 is heated?

Write the equations.

(i) NH3 + 3Cl2 (excess ) NCl3+ 3HCl

Chlorine replaces hydrogen completely to form nitrogen trichloride which is an explosive and the remaining chlorine forms HCl.

(ii) XeF6 + 2H2O XeO2F2 + 4HF

Partial hydrolysis of XeF6 gives oxyfluorides.

OR

(i) (NH4)2Cr2O7 N2 + 4H2O + Cr2O3

(ii) 4H3PO3 PH3 + 3H3PO4

On heating, it undergoes disproportionation to form PH3 and H3PO4 with +3 and +5 oxidation states respectively.
