Why did French colonizers consider education as an important way to civilize the Vietnamese?

The French considered Education to be an important way to civilize the Vietnamese in order to create a class educated Vietnamese who would eventually serve the interests of the French administration.

NOTE – The idea of the civilizing mission was laid down by the French who claimed to bring modern civilization to the Vietnamese. They took for granted that Europe had developed the most advanced society and it, therefore, became the duty of the Europeans to introduce these modern ideas to the colony even if it meant destroying local cultures, religions, and traditions because these were seen as outdated and prevented modern development.
