State the meaning of gradual urbanization of Madras.

During the colonial rule, Madras (Chennai) gradually started to become urbanized. Madras was considered as first expanding city. It became an important center of trade and commerce as. As a result many new suburbs came up around the city. Many people started to migrate from villages and started to settle in these suburbs.
