What is meant by homologous series?

A series of compounds in which the same functional group substitutes for the hydrogen in a carbon chain is called homologous series.

Eaxample: Methane (CH₄) and ethane (C₂H₈).

There are a part of homologous series & the difference among these molecules is that they have different numbers of CH₂ groups.
