Why literacy rate is higher among the men in India. Explain in 3 points.

The literacy rate is higher among the men in India.

1. Gender discrimination is the main reason for the higher literacy rate among men. The prevailing thought that women are bound to work only in households gives more opportunities for men to get educated.

2. Lack of awareness among the rural masses in educating a female child is another factor that favours higher literacy rate among men. A female child is trained to do all the household work whereas the male child is sent to school. Educating women is even considered as a sin in some of the remote villages even today.

3. Even though laws are made against the dowry system, it is still in practice. Parents do not want to spend on the education of female child since they incur huge expense at the time of her marriage also. Hence, the social practices also play a crucial factor for the higher literacy rate among men in India.

Hence, even though we are in the twenty-first century where women have started making their footprints in all fields, the literacy rate is still poor when compared to men.
