State the idea other than economic exploitation behind the French colonization of Vietnam.

Other than economic exploitation, the idea of the French colonisation of Vietnam was to carry on ‘Civilising Mission’. They considered it was their duty to introduce modern ideas to the Vietnamese. They wanted to bring modern civilisation to Vietnam even if they had to destroy the local cultures, traditions and beliefs of the Vietnamese.
