Explain about Hoa Hao movement.

Hoa Hao movement was one of the nationalist movement in Vietnam. The religious beliefs and sentiments played an important role in inculcating a strong anti-colonial feeling among the citizens.

a. The Hoa Hao movement was started in the year 1939.

b. This movement started in the fertile Mekong delta area.

c. Huynh Phu So was the founder of this Hoa Hao movement.

d. This movement led to the foundation of the anti-French uprisings.

e. Huynh Phu So was much against gambling and he opposed the sale of child brides.

f. He also opposed the use of alcohol and opium.

g. However, the French decided to suppress this movement.

h. Hence, they called Huynh Phu So as mad.

i. He was exiled to Laos when he was declared sane by the doctors in 1941.

Many nationalist movements were started against the French who colonised Vietnam but it took nearly three decades for the Vietnamese to achieve their independence.
