Bleaching powder forms a milky solution in water. Explain.

The chemical formula of bleaching powder is CaOCl2. When bleaching powder is mixed in water, it reacts with carbon dioxide present in the air. This produces calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) which is mainly responsible for bringing milky appearance in the solution. The reaction takes place given as:
