Hydrogen gas is not evolved when most metals react with nitric acid'. State reasons to justify this statement.

As we know that nitric acid is a very strong oxidizing agent. When nitric acid reacts with any metal, the hydrogen gas produced get oxidized by nitric acid and as a result hydrogen gas converts into the water. For example:

Cu + HNO3 Cu(NO3)2 + 2NO + 4H2O


In the above reaction, the nitric acid oxidizes hydrogen gas into water and nitric acid is itself reduced to nitrogen monoxide (NO)
