Balanced chemical equation for the reactions that take place during respiration is:

C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O


There are two types of combination reaction:


i. Exothermic reaction: It is a reaction in which heat is released when reactants change into products.


ii. Endothermic reaction: It is a reaction in which energy is absorbed.



Respiration is considered as an exothermic reaction because, in respiration, a large amount of heat energy is released when oxidation of glucose takes place.


One more example of exothermic reaction is burning of natural gas:


CH4 + 2O2 CO2 + 2H2O
