Q8 of 28 Page 14

A compound 'X' is bitter to taste. It is a compound of washing powder and reacts with dilute HCl to produce brisk effervescence due to a colourless and odourless gas 'Y' which turns lime water milky due to the formation of 'Z' when an excess of CO2 is passed milkiness disappear due to the formation of 'P'. Identify 'X' 'Y' 'Z' and 'P" . write the equation in the formation of Y Z and P.

It is given that the compound X is bitter to taste and it is a compound of washing powder.

i. Hence, X is sodium carbonate (Na2CO3)

ii. When Na2CO3 reacts with HCl, it gives a brisk effervescence of colourless and odourless gas, i.e., CO2 (Y)

Na2CO3 + 2HCl 2NaCl + CO2 + H2O

iii. The reaction of lime water (calcium hydroxide) with CO2 which turns lime water milky:

Ca(OH)2 + CO2 CaCO3 + H2O

iv. When an excess of CO2 is added to the limewater, milkiness disappeared due to the formation of calcium bicarbonate Ca(HCO3)2. The reaction is:

CaCO3 + CO2 + H2O Ca(HCO3)2

Thus, X is Na2CO3, Y is CO2, Z is CaCO3, and P is Ca(HCO3)2
