When was our constitution adopted, enacted and enforced?

After the failure of Cripps Mission, a Cabinet Mission was sent to India that proposed the idea of Constituent Assembly. The Mission proposed that there shall be a Union of India. The Cabinet rejected the Communal Representation demand by the Muslim League. The cabinet proposed that all the members of the assembly would be Indians.

• The Indian Constitution was drafted by the members of the constituent assembly.


• On 9th December 1946 first meeting of the assembly was held.


• The constituent assembly was divided into the assembly of Pakistan and India.


• The assembly adopted the constitution on 26th November 1949, but it came into effect on 26th January 1950.


January 26th was chosen as the date because of its historical importance. In 1930, on this date, Purna Swarajya was celebrated, following the resolution of Lahore session of the Indian National Congress.
