Give a brief account of inter-state disparities in poverty in India?

Poor people are unevenly distributed in various states of India. Poverty is declining in India but unevenly in the states. Some states have less number of poor people and therefore, low poverty ratios whereas some states have a large number of poor people and therefore, high poverty ratios. Poverty ratio is defined as the percentage of a number of poor people living below the poverty line of the total population of India. States which have very high poverty ratios are Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. Among these, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand have highest poverty ratios 39.93 and 36.96 respectively as of September 2013. States which have low poverty ratios are Haryana, Kerala, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Punjab etc. Inter-state disparities in poverty in India is defined as the percentage of the poor and is not the same in all the states in India.
