Walesa soon emerged as a leader of the striking workers in Poland. Identify three qualities that helped him to lead the strike.

Poland was ruled by the United Worker’s Party (Communist party of the East that ruled most part of eastern Europe). At that time no political parties were allowed to function, people could not choose their political party. On 14th August 1980, the workers of Lenin Shipyard went on strike; the shipyard was owned by the Government.

Lech Walesa was a former electrician of the shipyard and joined the strike later. The strike spread across the whole city and demands were getting large.


1. He demanded rights for the workers and led to the 21 point agreement.


2. An independent trade union was formed.


3. Corruptions and mismanagement in the government were revealed.


4. His negotiations with the government led to the agreement of conducting free elections.
