Subsistence and Plantation agriculture are some of the methods of farming.


Subsistence Farming:


When crops are grown to satisfy one’s own needs, it is called subsistence farming. There is no surplus for sale in the market.


Plantation agriculture:


When crops are grown for sale in the market with a motive to make a profit, it is called Plantation agriculture.


The following are the comparative features of Subsistence farming and plantation agriculture.

1. It is generally done in small patches of land.

2. Agricultural yield is less.

3. Varieties of crops are grown.

Subsistence farming is done in countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Northeast India, North Korea and Manchuria whereas tea and coffee plantations can be seen in countries like India, Srilanka, Brazil and China.

Mixed Farming:


The type of farming in which cultivation of crops is done along with rearing of animals.


Dairy farming:


Dairy farming is the type of farming in which animals like cow, goat, sheep etc., are reared for long term production of milk.

1. Both cultivations of crops and animal husbandry are done.



Only rearing of milching animals is done.



2. Crops that are grown under this farming include Barley, oats, wheat and fodder.



Milching animals include cow, goat, sheep and sometimes camel.



3. Mixed farming requires a lot of fixed and working capital and skilled human expertise.



Dairy farming requires only human expertise and less capital.



4. Intercropping and crop rotation is possible.



Animal husbandry is given more importance.



5. Mixed farming can be seen in the areas of North Western Europe and North Eastern America.



Dairy Farming is seen in Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania and Canada.
