Given:

We know that two matrices A and B are said to be equal if each element of A is equal to the corresponding element of B.

Equating the corresponding elements, we get

⇒ 3x + y = 1 … (1)

⇒ -y = 2 … (2)

⇒ 2y – x = -5 … (3)

From (2), y = -2

Substitute (2) in (1),

⇒ 3x + (-2) = 1

⇒ 3x = 3

∴ x = 1
