State reasons for women’s reform movement being often termed as middle-class reform movement.

Women’s reform movement in India was started by the women for the establishment of the equal social, economic and political rights. They started this reform movement for equal opportunities as men. Women’s reform movement often termed as middle-class reform movement because –

• The reformers who participated in this movement came from the western educated middle-class families.

• These reformers started this movement as they had pride in their own democratic traditions and took inspiration from the democratic ideals of the modern West.

There are various examples of this such as Raja Ram Mohan Roy led Anti-sati campaign in Bengal, M.G Ranade was the leading reformer of the Widow remarriage movement, Jyotibha Phule fought against the caste and gender oppression and Sir Syed Ahmed Khan led the social reform movement in Islam.
