Q14 of 25 Page 1

Point out one way in which caste has weakened in one sphere and remained strong in another.

The term caste is derived from the Portuguese casta, means pure breed. In other words, it is known by the two terms in Indian languages –Varna and Jati. It is determined by birth and has strict rules related to marriage, food and food sharing. They have subdivisions and occupations are traditionally linked to the caste. These are hereditary; it means they have to pass it on from generation to generation. Some of the castes like SC, ST were facing continuous discrimination due to their caste so government introduced the policy of reservation in various fields like to travel, in educational institutions, for those people caste has become suddenly visible and their only identity to be recognised in the society where people still does the discrimination based on caste. This is where caste has weakened and not served as the strengthening element.

Caste has remained strong during the time of struggle for independence. It was caste consideration that led to the mass mobilisations for the national movement and for the industrial jobs also, like in the textile mills of Mumbai and the Jute mills of Kolkata, caste and kinship-based lines were formed proving how rigid caste could be.
