Compare the racial divide of ‘Black Town’ and ‘White Town’ in colonial India.

The areas of British settlement were known as White Town. They lived in separate areas. The Indian merchants, artisans, and workers lived in Black Town and conducted economic dealings with the Europeans.

Black areas symbolized chaos, anarchy, filth, and disease. There was no sanitation and epidemics such as cholera and plague were widespread. On the other hand, the white town has regards for sanitation and public health. The proper drainage system was put in place.
