Marian was a beautiful child of seven. With dark curls framing her small pointed face, dark and a little more serious eyed and full, sensitive lips. Though Marian was dear and intelligent, the narrator had mixed feelings for Freda because firstly she had expected a golden coloured, golden voiced child before Marian was born and secondly she had expected a confident child. Anne feels that she is an ideal mother. Although her daughter was dumb and deaf, a child that broke her expectations, for Anne, this child was everything. At times she felt gloomy and dejected for being the mother of such a child yet her love for her was boundless.
