Yes, as a mother Anne’s attitude is quite natural because she was just not wanting to display her child disabilities to others. Anne is over sensitive and overly particular in keeping Marian’s deformity from Freda, probably, from all. Marian being a very sensitive child could have got a glimpse of her mother’s keeping things from others and in that case, had developed an alarming anxiety and worry about being deaf and dumb. But her longing for a child like Freda was foolish. If Anne had taken it like everything else about Marian, the child would not have been this withdrawn. Although Anne is a loving mother whose over sensitivity had already done a large amount of hurt and damage to Marian’s development. If Marian had observed her mother introducing her to children like Freda, she would have felt better about being deaf and dumb.
