Why didn't Anne approve of re-marriage?

Marian’s father died in a car-crash, shortly before she was born. Her love for Tom was so deep that she could not think of marrying someone. Anne was not in favour of getting married to another man because she feared that Marian would be lost between her mother and her step father. For Anne, Marian was and had to be most important, especially for her being such a child born with multiple disabilities. Besides, she believed that stepparents cause as much disharmony and far reaching consequences as in fiction.
