Why do you think does the poet smile in the end?


The poet’s parting words signify both her farewell to her mother and an effort to leave her with a heavy heart and a hope to see her again. The poet tries to act optimistic and assures herself that she will get an opportunity to see her mother soon. Her smiles signify her helplessness at the face of her mother’s inevitable death. She smiles and smiles as she tries to give her mother an assurance as well as tries accepting the situation herself thereby hiding pain and struggle that she undergoes in realizing the inevitable truth of her mother’s age.
