The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde

"God has forgiven him", said Virginia gravely. Who is Virginia talking about? What is her tone when she says this? What is the significance of forgiveness in this context?

Here, Virginia is talking about the Canterville ghost. The ghost talks to Virginia explaining to her his sufferings and telling him that he was longing for peace. Virginia was pure and innocent and therefore she could help him to achieve peace. Virginia sympathizes with his sadness and agrees to help him. They then vanish in a secret opening in the wall. Everyone in the Otis family was worried about Virginia’s disappearance but she was discovered at the top of the stairs after some time. The only reason she gave for her disappearance was that she had helped the Canterville ghost to get peace and that he wouldn’t come back to disturb their family again. Sir Simon gifted Virginia a box of jewelery. Virginia directed their family to the place where she had first discovered the skeletal remains in the secret chamber. Sir Simon’s body was laid to rest after 4 days. She concealed whatever happened when she disappeared with the ghost. Her tone was gentle and forgiving. With her forgiving attitude, she helped the ghost in getting a burial and achieving peace.
