A: There was a strong revolt in Vendee, during the days of the National Convention. The revolt was against the conscriptions – hiring of soldiers to serve in the army. But Robespierre’s Department of Public Safety cracked down on the revolting men with a heavy hand.


R: R is incorrect. The peasants were jealous of the King. They never liked his lavish lifestyles, and in fact, were responsible for the departure of the King from Versailles to Varennes. They were eager and forthright to raise their pitchforks and mob the king’s palaces and estates.
