Answer the following questions briefly

Who were Puritans? Why did they leave England?


i) Puritans were a group of Christian reformers. They advocated for changes in the Church of England, which fell under the territory of the Roman Catholic Church


ii) Puritans were forced to flee England because they were seen as treacherous by the English kings, notably James I and Charles I. they were widely persecuted.


iii)Hence, they left England for the Americas in large numbers, to establish a Puritan way of life. The first among many went aboard the Mayflower, which set sail from Plymouth in 1620. They established colonies, most prominently – New Plymouth and Massachusetts.
