Assignment

Attempting an account of Bastille prison.

1. The Bastille prison was constructed as a fort in 1347. The fort was used to guard the borders of France, and had significant military strength.

2. However, under the Bourbons, the fort was converted into a prison for criminals. People from across the French territories wound up in Bastille for a myriad of crimes.

3. The prison was actually well-maintained and equipped. It had libraries and other activities for inmates. Despite this, the prison was criticised for the fact that it had several inmates.

4. The king took the criticism to mind, and over the years, several prisoners were released. In fact, at the time of storming of Bastille in 1789, it only had eight criminals.

5. The fort was razed to the ground by the French revolutionaries. It’s stone remains were sent across France as relics of the French Revolution and the power of the Third estate.
