What are fundamental duties? How would you follow these in your school premises?

The Fundamental Duties became a part of our constitution after the 42^nd amendment Act of 1976. Every citizen is required to keep these duties in mind, and work towards fulfilling them. They serve as a talisman for each Indian, so that if we are confused whether we should take a particular action, we can refer to these duties and see whether our actions violate them.

The following Fundamental Duties can be upheld in our school premises:

a) Respect for the Constitution and its ideals and institutions, the National Flag and the National Anthem: Students should be taught to respect the National symbols, especially the Flag and the Anthem. The flag should be hoisted on government holidays, and the anthem sung in morning assemblies and after school functions.

b) To defend the country and render national service when called upon to do so: NCC and NSS are great agencies to promote social service and the love and regard for military service among students.

c) To promote harmony and spirit of common brotherhood amongst all the people of India: We can do so by actively teaching the demerits of discrimination and encouraging students to work in groups and teams

d) To value and preserve the rich heritage of our composite culture: Assemblies and functions should be organised to celebrate major festivals in schools

e) To protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers and wildlife and have compassion on living creatures: This can be done by promote vegetation and gardening clubs on campus, organising cleanliness drives etc.
