Let’s find a number such that one-fourth of the number is 1 less than one-third of the number.

Let a number be x

Now according to the given criteria,


one-fourth of the number = …..(i)


1 less than one-third of the number = …….(ii)


So from question equation (i) and equation (ii) are equal,


Hence




By cross multiplying we get


⇒ 3x=4(x-3)


⇒ 3x=4x-12


⇒ 12=4x-3x


⇒ x=12


Hence the number is 12
